Definition: The federal government mandates that nearly all-new buildings must be accessible to and useable by the disabled. Existing facilities are required to be accessible only when program accessibility is not feasible in any other way. The Americans with Disabilities Act is such a law. It establishes a clear and comprehensive prohibition of discrimination on the basis of disability.
Accessible route is a continuos unobstructed path connecting all accessible elements and space of a building or facility. Interior accessible routes may include the corridors, floors, ramps, elevators and clear space at fixtures. Exterior accessible routes may include parking issues, ramps, curb ramps, walks, gratings, change in level and crosswalks at vehicular ways.
Mission: To provide general assistance regarding ADA and California Building Code accessibility requirements (when viewed in its entirety, is readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities) for existing facilities, new construction, building renovations and small projects.
Implementation: Fire Division staff conducts field surveys identifying barriers (architectural and communications) that limit the accessibility to individuals with disabilities. ADA deficiency reports are forwarded to Physical Facilities for making corrections for compliance. Division staff is involved with reviewing drawings and conducting construction inspections in the field to ensure accessibility requirements are being addressed according to ADA and building code requirements.
