Confined Space Program

Definition: A confined space is a space that is large enough so an employee can bodily enter to perform work and has limited or constricted means for entry or exit and is not designed for continuous occupancy. UCSB has numerous areas that meet the definition of a confined space. Both Federal and Cal/OSHA require employers to identify confined spaces, and implement practices and procedures to protect employees from these hazards.

Background: The responsibility of Confined Space program has been recently (June 2009) assigned to the Industrial Hygiene Program to redevelop this program area from ground up. The transfer of responsibility was done to ensure that worker safety, university liability issues, and regulatory requirements are being met.
