Respiratory Protection

Definition: When inhalation hazards cannot be adequately controlled by engineering or administrative means, the use of respiratory protection (as an additional control measure) is warranted. Respirators are designed to protect only against specific types of substances and in certain concentration ranges. Per UCSB Policy 5440, The Office of Environmental Health and Safety will act as the sole source for purchasing, maintaining, fitting and approving the use of all respiratory equipment and for training the campus personnel in its use.

Implementation: The process of obtaining respirators consists of the following:

   • Contact EH&S department at x3743 or x8787 for receiving information and forms (included in Appendices of the Respiratory Protection Manual [PDF])
.  • An industrial hygiene evaluation of your work process/area will be performed.
   • Required forms will be filled by the industrial hygienist and your supervisor.
   • Contact EH&S (ext. 3743) to coordinate for your medical evaluation, and to make an appointment for your training and fit testing.
