Ventilation Systems

Definition: EH&S provides technical assistance on design and alterations of local exhaust and general ventilation systems. All ventilation system designs for new buildings and renovations are reviewed by the campus industrial hygienist to ensure that those designs meet appropriate standards and guidelines. A fume hood is one specific type of local exhaust ventilation used in UCSB labs and shops to provide engineering control of airborne hazardous materials.

Implementation: The following elements provide technical assistance on ventilation system designs, maintenance and concerns:

  • UC Laboratory Safety Design Guide [PDF]
  • Chemical Fume Hood Guide [PDF] (design, construction and maintenance).
  • For technical assistance on design/alteration of general ventilation system or fume hood, call x8787.
  • Annual testing and certification of all campus fume hoods and gas cabinets are conducted by EH&S. To request fume hood testing or certification renewal, call EH&S at x3743, x8787 or x4899.
  • To report problems with your general ventilation system or fume hood, call x2661 (Facilities Management Trouble Desk) x3743 or x8787 (EH&S Industrial Hygienist).
